Cree Couture Spring/Summer 2020
'Cree Couture' is a collection inspired by the craftsmanship style of haute couture in the Cree style capturing the spirit on the modern indigenous people of treaty eight woodland cree. This collection seeks to visually express Indigenous philosophy, stories and memories of our people in a modern way though the art of fashion and crafts people.

The themes for the collection are as follows: the prophecy of the Rainbow Warriors, The ancient prophecy foretelling of the Rainbow Warriors was recounted by many Indigenous Nations across North America, including the Hopi and Zuni in the southwest, the Cree in the far north, the Cherokee in the southeast and Sioux Indians from the Plains.These Nations prophesied that people of different colours, classes and creeds will unite to spread the wisdom of living in harmony with each other, all creatures and the land at a time when the Earth is ravaged by the powerful effects of greed and destruction. This diverse group of people will be called the Rainbow Warriors and their actions and deeds will reestablish balance in the world, in turn renewing the planet with health, integrity and spiritual prosperity. Lastly Woodland Cree Couture the garments are crafted emphasizing the traditional skills of weaving and quillwork, and the textiles employed in their manufacture include moose hide, elk hide and fish leather, among denim and neoprene.

Alaynee Goodwill contributed to the project, creating emblems of the Alberta rose in plains quillwork and beads. She is a registered social worker, child and family advocate, business owner, arts instructor, powwow dancer and mother. She describes her artwork as "paying tribute to the history of a plains tribe and carrying the cultural continuum of a beautiful and proud people." John Cardinal contributed his street style artistry through his hand painting of animal figures on denim garments. His inspirations are music, clothing, art and comic books. Lastly, Bella Calahoo-Stonehouse, 17 years old, emerging talented artist beaded jewelry for the collection modern and traditional blend. With an all Cree cast of models the show showcased the modern indigenous people of the north.
